ASHLAND, OR. -- October 6, 1997 -- Open Door Networks Inc. today announced that it has begun shipping its recently-introduced ShareWay IP Gateway, a product which lets any AppleShare-compatible server provide Macintosh file service using Internet protocols. ShareWay IP works with AppleTalk Filing Protocol (AFP) servers to provide Macintosh file service over the Internet or an intranet, extending AppleShare's ease-of-use and Mac OS integration to those environments. Prior to ShareWay IP, most AFP servers could only provide Macintosh file service on AppleTalk networks.
"With the ever-expanding reach of the Internet and the ongoing migration of our networks from AppleTalk to Internet protocols, ShareWay IP provides us with critically needed connectivity," said Flip Phillips, a research scientist at the Ohio State University. Available in beta form for only a month, the product has already received rave reviews as "a godsend for small workgroups."
ShareWay IP is available in two distinct versions. ShareWay IP Standard Edition, with a special introductory price of $189 ($119 educational), supports any AFP 2.1 or later server, including AppleShare versions 3 and 4, Mac OS personal file sharing, and AFP servers on Windows NT, Novell Netware and Unix systems. Shareway IP Standard Edition runs on any Macintosh on the same AppleTalk network as the server, including on the same Macintosh as an AppleShare 3, 4 or personal file sharing server. ShareWay IP Personal Edition, priced at $59 ($49 educational) during the introductory period, is designed specifically to support personal file sharing running on the same Macintosh as ShareWay IP. The introductory pricing period runs through November 30, 1997.
ALSO AVAILABLE IN THE 'COMPANION PACK FOR APPLESHARE IP'
ShareWay IP Standard Edition is additionally available as part of Open Door's Companion Pack for AppleShare IP, also announced today. The Companion Pack provides an AppleShare IP administrator with a complete set of utilities for enabling easy, consistent access to the file, Web and FTP components of AppleShare IP, regardless of whether that access is made from AppleTalk or Internet Protocol networks. With the Companion Pack, key Macintosh services can be accessed using either the Chooser or a Web browser, providing the best of both the AppleTalk and Internet worlds and maintaining AppleTalk's ease of use in mixed and IP-only environments.
"Open Door's Companion Pack for AppleShare IP is a great way for AppleShare administrators to obtain key add-on functionality in a convenient all-in-one package," said John Hanay, AppleShare IP product manager. "AppleShare IP and the Companion Pack work together to bring users a powerful, easy to use system regardless of their network environment."
The Companion Pack for AppleShare IP includes volume-licensed copies of Open Door's AFP Engage! URL Processor and Web Engage! Chooser extensions, plus single machine licenses of the Web Engage! plug-in and ShareWay IP Gateway Standard Edition. Volume licensing is designed to match that of AppleShare IP, with introductory pricing ranging from $239 ($149 educational) for a 5 machine license, to $999 ($599 educational) for 250 machines.
